Part 4--Time to visit the estates
India, A Country's Secret Revealed
"Coffee Estates"
Story & Photos
by Sean Grant
After a long stretch we all proceeded to our respective vehicles and headed out to Hassan (our first top in coffee country). Once there we checked into our next hotel (Hotel Ashok). And again we freshened up a bit and met for dinner. I can't really describe our food with enough justice; I'll just tell you that everywhere we ate was outstanding! Everything from the light weight snacks to the main courses to the desserts was to die for. After dinner we all relaxed and reflected on our experiences to that point knowing that the next day would be the beginning of our world-wind pace of visiting the different coffee estates.
A new day has arrived and I for one was eager to get things going. Just past the crack of dawn we met for a hearty breakfast and prepared ourselves for a long drive to the first of the estates we were going to visit. Before I continue on with our adventure, I must mention that each estate we were privileged to visit offered us wonderful food and coffees that were grown on their estates.
If memory serves me correctly our first visit took us the the Dewan Estate owned by Mr. Busavanna. At his farm we had the chance to see both coffee and peppers being grown there. We also saw his nursery where plants (seedlings) grow for for approximately one year until they are strong enough to be transplanted with the rest of the crop. Next we went to the Mallige Estate, owned by Mr. Basavaraj. Mr. Basavaraj told us that his estate was named for the Jasmine flower. I must say, that the sweet smells on this estate were very intoxicating. On his estate, as the case with most of the growers raise both Arabica and Robusta plants. We then moved onto the Chowki Estate, owned by Mr. Vinayak. His estate like all of the estates was very beautiful. The one thing that really stood out was listening to the birds. They made sure that their presence was known by the continuous chatter and whooping. Our next visits stopped us by the Malalli Estate, owned by Mr. Chethan, the Thogarihunkal Estate, owned by Mr. Gowda, his brother and his nephew. Their farm has been in the family since 1850, WOW!
